Mr. Knight was the manager of a hotel. One weekend all of the hotels in the city were full because there was a large meeting. On Friday, three men came into the hotel and asked for rooms. Mr. Knight said there were no rooms ready because of the meeting. The men were unhappy.

Mr. Knight wanted to help them. He remembered that Room 418, a small room, was empty. He asked them if they could share a room. The three men said they would. Mr. Knight said the room would be thirty dollars; ten dollars for each person. Each man gave him the money and then went up to the room.

Mr. Knight soon began to feel sorry. “Thirty dollars is a lot to ask as a price for that small room.” he thought. He called his assistant over and said, “Here is five dollars. Take it to the men in Room 418. I asked too much for their room.”

The assistant took the money. While he was on the way there, he started to think, “How can three men divide five dollars? I’ll give them each only one dollar and keep the two dollars for myself. The men will be happy to get something back. And Mr. Knight will never know.” So the assistant returned one dollar to each man.

Sunday is more like Monday than it used to be. Places of business that used to keep daytime “business hours” are now open late into the night. And on the Internet, the hour of the day and the day of the week have become irrelevant(不相关的).A half century ago in the United states, most people experienced strong and precise(严格的) dividing lines between days of rest and days of work, school time and summer time. Today the boundaries still exist, but they seem not clear.  Ks5u

The law in almost all states used to require stores to close on Sunday; in most, it no longer does. It used to keep the schools open in all seasons except summer, in most, it still does. And whether the work week should strengthen its legal limits, or whether it should become more “flexible” is often debated. How should we, as a society, organize our time? Should we go even further in relaxing the boundaries of time until we live in a world in which every minute is much like every other?

These are not easy questions even to ask. Part of the difficulty is that we rarely recognize the “law of time” even when we meet it face to face. We know as children that we have to attend school a certain number of hours, a certain number of days, a certain number of yearsbut unless we meet the truant officer(学监), we may well think that we should go to school due to social custom and parents’ demand rather than to the law. As adults we are familiar with “extra pay for overtime working”, but less familiar with the fact that what constitutes(构成) “overtime” is a matter of legal definition. When we turn the clock forward to start daylightsaving time, have we ever thought to ourselves, “Here is the law in action”? As we shall see, there is a lot of law that has great influence on how to organize and use time: compulsory education law(义务教育法), overtime law, and daylight-saving lawas well as law about Sunday closing, holidays, being late to work , time zones, and so on. Once we begin to look for it, we will have no trouble finding a law of time to examine and assess(evaluate).

60.By saying “Sunday is more like Monday than it used to be.” the writer means that __________.

  A. work time is equal to rest time

B. many people have a day off on Monday.

C. it is hard for people to decide when to rest

D. the line between work time and rest time is unclear.

61.The author raises the questions in Paragraph 2 to introduce the fact that people__________.  Ks5u

A. fail to make full use of their time Ks5u

B. enjoy working overtime for extra pay Ks5u

  C. are unaware of the law of time Ks5u

  D. welcome flexible working hours Ks5u

  A. need to acquire(master) knowledge Ks5u

  B. have to obey their parents Ks5u

  C. need to find companions Ks5u

  D. have to observe the law Ks5u

  A. Our life is governed by the law of time Ks5u

B. How to organize time is not worth debating.  Ks5u

  C. New ways of using time change our society.  Ks5u

D. Our time schedule is decided by social customs Ks5u

Sports can help you keep fit and get in touch with nature. However, whether you are on the mountains, in the waves, or on the grassland, you should be aware that your sport of choice might have great influence on the environment.  ks5u

Some sports are resource-hungry. Golf, as you may know, eats up not only large areas of countryside, but also tons of water. Besides, all sorts of chemicals and huge amounts of energy are used to keep its courses(球场)in good condition. This causes major environmental effects. For example, in the dry regions of Portugal and Spain, golf is often held responsible for serious water shortage in some local areas.  ks5u

There are many environment-friendly sport. Power walking is one of them that you could take up today. You don’t need any special equipment except a good pair of shoes, and you don’t have to worry about resources and your purse. Simple and free, power walking can also keep you fit. If you walk regularly, it will be good for your heart and bones. Experts say that 20 minutes of power walking daily can make you feel less anxious, sleep well and have better weight control.  ks5u

Whatever sport you take up, you can make it greener by using environment-friendly equipment and buying products made from recycled materials. But the final goal should be “green gyms”. They are better replacements for traditional health clubs and modern sports centers. Members of green gyms play sports outdoors, in the countryside or other open spaces. There is no special requirement for you to start your membership. And best of all, it’s free. ks5u

Hey there, Ks5u

So you’re about to spend four years of your life and tens of dollars of your parents’ money, and all you really know about college is that all of your friends are going. Do you ever stop to wonder why you’re going? Ks5u Ks5u

Relax. You’re making the right decision. First of all, you’ll discover what interests you by taking courses in many subjects. For example, it’s hard to decide if you want to be a painter if you’ve never painted any pictures; once you’re in a drawing-room on campus, you’ll know one way or the other. College is also a lot of fun—after you graduate, you’ll be working every weekday for 50 or so years. And remember that college graduate earn about twice the income of those who never attended college. Ks5u Ks5u

Finding the right college can be difficult. Fortunately, Johnson Review is here to help you every step of the way. Ks5u Ks5u

*Researching Schools. To us, the most important decision you’ll make is to choose the school that really fits you best — not the one that is the most competitive or has the best-equipped rooms. Ks5u Ks5u

*Applying to School. On JohnsonReview.com. , you’ll find hundreds of actual college application(申请)and links to many more. Ks5u Ks5u

*Raising Your Scores. American College Test is one of the most important parts of the admission(录取)course. It’s not the most important, though, and everyone needs to prepare for the best. But, if you can do better, find the right course for better scores. Ks5u Ks5u

*Paying for School. Most families need financial aid for the high cost of college. The problem is that financial aid seems difficult to get and many families get caught up in the price of college rather than learning the ways to get financial aid. If you really do your research, you’ll learn that you can afford to attend any college, no matter the cost. Ks5u Ks5u

Honesty comes in many forms. First there’s self-honesty. Is what people see the real article or do you appear through smoke and mirrors? I find that if I try to be something I’m not. I feel unsure of myself and take out a part from my PBA(personal bank account). I love how singer Judy Garland put it. “Always be a first-class version(版本) of yourself, instead of a second-class version of somebody else. ”

Then there’s honesty in our actions. Are you honest at school, with your parents, and with your boss? If you’ve ever been dishonest, I think we all have, try being honest, and notice how whole it makes you feel. Remember, you can’t do wrong and feel right. This story by Jeff is a good example of that: Ks5u Ks5u

In my second year of study, there were three kids in my math class who didn’t do well. I was really good at it. I would charge them three dollars for each test that I helped them pass. I’d write on a little piece of paper all the right answers, and hand them off. Ks5u Ks5u

At first I felt like I was making money, kind of a nice job. I wasn’t thinking about how it could hurt all of us. After a while I realized I shouldn’t do that any more, because I wasn’t really helping them. They weren’t learning anything, and it would only get harder down the road. Cheating certainly wasn’t helping me. Ks5u Ks5u

It takes courage to be honest when people all around you are getting away with cheating on tests, lying to their parents, and stealing at work. But, remember, every act of honesty is a deposit(储蓄) into your PBA and will build strength. Ks5u Ks5u

72.The underlined part “appear through smoke and mirrors” in the first paragraph means     .

   A. to be honest Ks5u Ks       B. to be unreal Ks5u Ks5u     C. to become clear         D. to come from an imagined world Ks5u Ks5u

73.Which of the following can best explain Judy Garland’s words? Ks5u Ks5u

   A. Be your true self rather than follow others. Ks5u Ks5u

   B. Don’t copy others or you can’t be the first class. Ks5u Ks5u

   C. Make efforts to be the first instead of the second. Ks5u Ks5u

   D. Don’t learn from others unless they’re excellent. Ks5u Ks5u

74.What does the author expect to show by Jeff’s story? Ks5u Ks5u

   A. Honesty can be of great help. Ks5u Ks5u

   B. A bad thing can be turned into a good one. Ks5u Ks5u

   C. Helping others cheat can do good to nobody. Ks5u Ks5u

   D. One should realize the wrong in his bad deeds. Ks5u Ks5u

75.In the last paragraph the author mainly wants to express         . Ks5u Ks5u

A. one must be brave to be honest Ks5u

B. it’s difficult to be honest when others are not  Ks5u Ks5u
